I think everyone should play groups they enjoy, the meta doesn't need to be followed at all times. The only gates espionage clears are cleared easier and more efficiently by Diplomatic. Arguably exploration makes more money than either of them(in the right situation), so in SP I can safely call econ and trade pointless despite having some really strong modifiers. Econ and trade make more money, and money is only a barrier in the very early game. No other group does this at all, let alone better. Idea groups generally fall into two group, do they clear a barrier or not? If they do clear a barrier, does another group do it better? Admin ideas makes it so you can core faster, which means you can eat more often which leads to more total land eaten. That's all without going in on the weaker ideas or evaluating opportunity cost by not taking diplomatic or even influence. That's going to plummet in usefulness when you get religious, or you'll suffer the whole game for no DV. Claims are good early on, double good when you can chain claims. You can only get value out of the group by tying up your diplomats which need to be improving, improving, improving all while declaring wars that take half a year to come back from. Even assuming good/regular luck they are taking up a diplomat, which I can't stress enough is the best thing in the whole group. There is a non-zero chance that you just keep getting caught before you can really get those full effects. Spynetworks are first and foremost RNG dependent. AE juggling and diplomat micro is the way, not AE reduction. Better to spread out your AE into another theatre so you can take a larger amount of absolute land. You have an idea group that lets you take more land anywhere, or one that makes you feel safer taking a bit more land in a high AE area. It's going to be such a tiny part of your total income by the mid game you're not going to notice it.ĪE reduction is OK if you're stacking it super high, but it's not worth bothering with unless you have very specific goals. There are so many bonuses to advisor cost right now that running level 5s isn't that big an ask once things are rolling. The only thing in Espionage Ideas that I value is the Diplomat.ġ0% advisor cost is going to be worth more in the beginning of the game rather than later, paradoxically enough.
